We really struggled with whether or not we would send Kaleb to school this year. He just turned 5 and he acts younger than his peers. Also, studies show boys are better off if they are older compared to their classmates. They are taller and stronger than their peers and apparently this is a good thing. But, then we have Kaleb. He is small, and socially immature, but he is also very smart. I mean, very smart. Of course this is mommy and daddy talking, but we felt like he could tackle the work. We wanted him to be challenged, so off to Kindergarten he went.
We decided to send him to the elementary school he is zoned for, which is ranked well in our region and state. I brought him into school on his first day and he sat in line easily with his class. When it was time to go, I sat on the sidelines and blew him a kiss (fighting back the tears of course). He blew me a kiss back and off he went. It was simple as that. Luke and I walked back to the car as our big boy entered kindergarten.
I was emotionally fragile all day and couldn't wait to pick him up at the end of the day. Of course, he loved it. Since then, we have had ups and downs. Kaleb is super-tired at the end of the day. He learns and plays all day, only to have homework to do in the evenings. He frequently tells us his hands are tired. But, he practices writing his name and other letters in his free time. He understands and knows his sight words. He is reading simple books on his own and is completing mathematical tasks on his own. To say we are proud is an understatement.
Here is Kaleb on his first day of school. He told us he wanted to be a volcano when he grew up. He has been fascinated with volcanoes all summer. We have built a few. Now that we are in September, he says he wants to work in a letter factory. He loves his letters.
